​Pleco is a common name for the suckermouth catfish, a tropical freshwater fish. They are also known as "janitor fish" because they can clean algae from tanks.  Plecos have sucker-shaped mouths and heavy armored plates on their bodies.  They are named for the armor-like scutes that cover their upper bodies and heads. Their coloring varies depending on their environment.
